MIT Sloan MBA Salary and placements (2024 Graduating Class) - 10 Trends

1) Consulting – A Strong $190,000

Despite a slowdown in Consulting, the industry attracted a $190,000 base salary, converting 32.1% of the total offers at MIT Sloan MBA. The compensation was similar to the offer at Harvard. Only Stanford was ahead of the curve. The trend has been consistent in recent years.

2)  Median Salary, School Support and Entrepreneurship

The median base salary of MIT Sloan was $169,550  below the $175,000 benchmark in peer M7 schools primarily from the slowdown in the technology industry and a large percentage of engineering graduates in the cohort. Both school facilitated and internships were below the 65% threshold, indicating employers seeking similar talent in peer schools.

Apart from Harvard and Stanford, MIT became the third school with double-digit (10%) representation in Entrepreneurship.

3) Investment Banking – Low Representation But Hit $175,000 Benchmark

Finance placements increased at MIT Sloan MBA – jumping by 5%, contributed by a surge in offers in Investment Banking (5.9% of the class). The $175,000 median base salary was a contrast to the $150,000 offered in the VC industry, which witnessed a slowdown for the 2nd consecutive year

4) Technology Placements – Hiring Dropped Compensation Grew

Hiring in the technology industry dropped by 5% even for a technology-focused school like MIT Sloan. However, the base salary improved by $4,000 to cross $160,000 – a new benchmark for M7 and T15 schools. Stanford is clearly an exception, with a $185,000 median base salary.

5) General Management and Leadership Development – A Strong Growth Function at MIT Sloan

General management and leadership development program offers attracted 6.8% of MIT graduates, driving the median base salary to $160,000 – a significant $8,000 increase, slightly behind Harvard’s $164,000.

6) Healthcare and Pharma Growing, Operations Stable

MIT Sloan had one of the highest offers in Healthcare and Pharma (6.8%), crossing the $150,000 median base salary - $10,000 below Harvard’s and $15,000 below Stanford’s offers. Operations and project management roles remained relatively stable, with 9% of graduates securing these positions in 2024, compared to 8.9% the previous year.

7) PE - The Growth Function at MIT Sloan

While private equity accounted for only 2.7% of hires, it offered the highest compensation at a $200,000 base salary and $30,000 signing bonus, totaling $230,000—a package competitive with Stanford, where private equity commanded similar compensation.

Asset management, which employed 4.1% of graduates, also reported a strong median salary of $177,500 and a $50,000 signing bonus.

8) Product Management Placements – Another Strength of MIT Sloan MBA

Product management offers were steady at 13.6% of hires at MIT, though last year, the representation had crossed 16%. The median base salary was above the median salary in the Technology industry but faced pressure, as evident in the drop from $169,000 to $163,875.

9) Regional Trends

US placements improved by 2%, reaching 94.6% of all offers, while the base salary dropped by $3,000 to reach $170,000.
West and North East regions both faced pressure, with offers dropping by 5% and 3%, respectively. Finance offers – the highest in the Northeast region held steady at $175,000 while the West, driven by the Technology industry, faced significant pressure, experiencing an $8,000 dip in median base salary.

Although low in representation, the offers in the Southeast experienced significant salary growth ($22,000 jump) while the South maintained steady growth to cross $163,000.

Mid-West experienced both a contraction in offers and a slowdown in median base salary, falling below the $145,000 benchmark.

10) Top Employer Trends

Amazon, McKinsey & Company, and Bain & Company – three top employers at MIT Sloan MBA were cautious with their hiring this year.

BCG continues to show enthusiasm for MIT’s consulting talent, hiring 21 graduates.

Only four employers crossed the double-digit representation in offers at MIT Sloan MBA, a reflection of the industry slowdown in Technology & Consulting and diverse placements at MIT Sloan (7 industries and 12 functions)
